About this piece:
[World War One commemorative cotton handkerchief Map of Europe, c1914]
Printed colour. Very light spotting to lower left in blank margin, otherwise in clean & well-preserved condition.
The War initiated a massive upsurge in printed commemoratives & patriotic memorabilia. Leading British national newspapers produced an ever-growing series of printed maps and panoramas (& accompanying flag pins) delineating the different War fronts & theatres throughout the course of the conflict.
Other maps took the form of colour-printed commemorative scarves or handkerchiefs. Cheap & popular “patriotic” pieces, they were also practical & useful in their own right.
This map was probably published at the outbreak of the War and offers a handy reference to the geography of Europe and the various combatants & neutrals. Indeed this map clearly differentiates between the Allies (pink), Central Powers (grey) and Neutrals (purple).
