Description:
French patriotic “cinderella” stamp, modelled on Maurice Neumont’s 1917 poster design, depicting the menacing Prussian Octopus
About this piece:
[Cinderella stamp, c1917-18]: Taisez-vous! Méfiez-vous! La Pieuvre Germanique a des tentacules partout…[Keep quiet! Be suspicious! The German Octopus has its tentacles everywhere…]
Stamp. Wide borders all round and traces of old perforations. Printed colours. Seemingly unused and with original gum backing.
Closely linked to the Maurice Neumont Octopus poster and its derivative propaganda leaflet is this small cinderella stamp, decorative wartime propaganda items, issued by Parisian entrepreneur, Gaston Delandre [1883-1923]. Neumont’s Prussian Octopus re-appears once again, extending its tentacles across a map of France & Western Europe. “Be Quiet! Be Suspicious! The German Octopus has its tentacles everywhere” proclaims the message. Given the similarities in the design & imagery, it seems possible that these stamps were commissioned from Delandre by La Conference au Village contre la Propagande ennemie en France in 1917.
